It has up to 13 whorls, most older snails have a corroded apex.
The suture is pronounced. The shell shows a clear axial sculpturation.
The body whorl shows spiralling lines ending in the ovoid to slightly teardrop-shaped aperture.
The snail has a round operculum with a central nucleus (multispiral). It is significantly smaller than the aperture.
Its body coloration is black with white speckles. The tentacles are straight, and the eyes are located at their bases. The snail looks strong and compact.
Tylomelania patriarchalis belongs to the largest Tylomelanias from the Malili lakes. In the females (90 mm) the largest embryos of 17.5 mm were found.
Habitat:
Tylomelania patriarchalis originates from Lake Matano on Sulawesi where it lives in the shallow-water areas. However, it has also been found at depths down to 40 m in soft substrates. The maximum pH value measured is at 8.5 there. Lake Matano is a soft-water lake.
Food:
It likes to dig in the mud in the aquarium, eats powdered food, and after a short time it even crawls towards food tablets purposefully. It takes vegetable dry food as well as dry food with animal proteins. I have not been able to watch them eat carrion, mosquito larvae or beef heart.
Like all snails it eats day and night with the exception of a few minutes' rest if it is offered food. As there is usually no food at night it rests during this time. I would not describe it as nocturnal. It proved to be flexible and compatible with being kept in a tank and adapted to the new food I offered very quickly.
Bevavior in the aquarium:
Tylomelania patriarchalis proved to be adaptable and compatible. It crawls through soft substrate as well as on hard ground, but seems to avoid high elevations. It is thankful for shadowy areas and cannot be found on the bright sand area very often. It does not have any problems with dwarf shrimp and is assertive when searching for food.
