Of course the sun could be the cause of your algal bloom. Is the aquarium getting direct sunlight? If so, you may consider shielding it from the sun somehow (say, by means of a canopy). Covering the aquarium sites with jablo isn't enough if the water is receiving direct sunlight. Moreover, if direct sunlight is the cause of the algal bloom, any chemical product would be useless, as the algae would grow back.

If the aquarium is well shaded, you should test your water to establish whether parameters such as nitrates are within limits. If they aren't you should step up your water changes.

Hi Brian, If your tank has strong sunlight directly on it, you need a more powerful uv sterilizer.

You may need to buy a higher wattage one, than the 9 watt that you currently have! You should buy one for a small pond in that case!

Try covering your aquarium with netting (green windbreaker) several feet above the tank to block direct sunlight.

The most effective way to get rid of algae is to reduce the amount of nutrients in your water so it is good to keep with your water changes plan.

Remember the algae does not hurt fish.  NEVER use Copper Sulphate treatments that were used in the old days!

I have green algae growing at the sides of the tank/pond housing shubunkins, but the water is clear (I use a uv sterilizer) and it is in almost total shade. I also have a big umbrella plant growing submerged and water hyacints floating on the surface.  I will be trying ramshorn snails to munch on the green algae on the sides..

30 ltr with red cherries/Endlers
250 ltr with malawis
250 ltr with shubunkins
60 ltr nano reef

Remember that some algal growth is normal. It really depends on how much algae you are getting. Is it limited to the sides of the pond?
